October 28, 2004: Exploring statin drugs and their
effect on the Alzheimer's disease process was a hot topic of scientific presentations at
the Society for Neuroscience's annual meeting at San Diego, California this week. The
potential of statins, a class of widely prescribed cholesterol-lowering drugs, in the
prevention of Alzheimer's disease has been shown in a number of large studies published in
Lancet and Archives of Neurology among others. Now new scientific studies are further
exploring how statins have an effect on the Alzheimer's disease process, increasing the
hope that these well-known safe drugs may provide a new treatment for patients with
Alzheimer's disease. |
