June 5, 2003: The need to improve the accuracy of the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease was highlighted by a newly released report from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. The report, Screening for Dementia: Recommendations and Rationale, reviewed the detection of dementia in older adults. According to the Report, "patients who had not received a dementia diagnosis accounted for 50% to 66% of all cases of dementia in the primary care samples studied." The Report concluded "the concept of detecting dementia at an early stage to allow interventions is a good one. Screening for dementia is worth pursuing with further research." |
